Damen Introduces Fuel Flexible Tugs for Evolving Maritime Regulations
Damen's Fuel Flexible Tugs are designed to adapt to changing maritime fuel standards and emissions regulations. With the EU Emissions Trading System expanding to include more vessels soon, towage companies will need to reduce emissions and may face costly carbon credit purchases.
Damen has launched its Fuel Flexible (FF) Tugs series, which includes the ASD Tug 2512 FF, ASD Tug 2713 FF, and ASD Tug 3313 FF. These vessels are designed to support diesel propulsion while allowing for easy retrofitting to alternative fuels like HVO or methanol as regulations evolve.
The EU Emissions Trading System is set to encompass vessels over 400 gross tonnes by 2027, prompting a need for towage operators to demonstrate sustainability to secure funding. The FF Tugs' modular energy concept provides additional space for future energy source integration, enabling operators to invest confidently in fleet renewal while maintaining flexibility for future fuel technologies. This approach minimizes financial risk as vessel owners await clearer market direction.
