Damen Shipyards Group has launched the NRP D. João II, a Multi-Purpose Vessel, for the Portuguese Navy. Designed for a variety of missions including humanitarian assistance and maritime surveillance, this vessel enhances Portugal's naval capabilities.

On April 7, Damen Shipyards Group launched the NRP D. João II, a Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) 10720 for the Portuguese Navy, at Damen Shipyards Galati, Romania. The project is funded by the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility as part of the NextGenerationEU program, managed by Recover Portugal (PRR).
This vessel is intended for diverse operations, including oceanographic research and disaster response, and features high system autonomy for unrestricted service in various environments. Sea trials are planned for later this year, and the vessel will enhance both Portuguese naval operations and European maritime security. Its design reflects a strategic partnership between Damen and the Portuguese Navy, leading to the development of new Multi-Purpose Support Ships (MPSS) integrating military-grade technology.
