Data Centers' Surge in Power Demand Raises Climate Concerns Amid U.S.-China AI Competition

The Homer City facility is set to generate power equivalent to the needs of the Philadelphia urban area, marking a trend of large data centers emerging nationwide. These facilities are projected to consume over 10% of the U.S. power usage by 2030, with energy consumption estimates rising between 60% and 150%.

By that year, U.S. data centers are expected to use around 430 trillion watt-hours, enough to power nearly 16 Chicagos. Tech companies, including Google, are re-evaluating their clean energy commitments as natural gas becomes the primary power source.

Meanwhile, data center firms are seeking substantial natural gas supplies, prompting concerns from power grid monitors about capacity limits. New projects in Texas, Wyoming, and Louisiana further illustrate the growing demand, with forecasts indicating that data centers could contribute significantly to carbon emissions by the 2030s.
