Data Centers to Rely on Off-Grid Gas Power Amid Grid Strains
Enverus forecasts a shift to off-grid power for 40% of new U.S. data center capacity by 2030, requiring $5 trillion investment. This trend emphasizes natural gas generation to meet growing energy demands, particularly in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

Enverus projects that by 2030, approximately 40% of all new U.S. data center capacity will rely on off-grid natural gas-fired power, necessitating an investment of about $5 trillion. The anticipated addition of 62 gigawatts of generation will primarily serve data centers in Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and the Western U.S.
Major tech firms, including Amazon and Google, are adopting these systems to address immediate electricity needs, with off-grid natural gas demand potentially reaching 1.3 billion cubic feet per day. The move towards this energy source is driven by operational urgency rather than climate goals, raising concerns about carbon-reduction targets.
