DefendTex Drone40 Wins Bid for Japanese Small Attack UAV Contract
DefendTex is poised to supply Japan's Ministry of Defense with the Drone40 UAV for its Small Attack Unmanned Aerial Vehicle program. This contract, part of Japan's defense strategy, highlights the growing collaboration between Australia and Japan in military unmanned systems.

DefendTex has reportedly won a tender to supply Japan’s Ministry of Defense with its Drone40 UAV, aimed at fulfilling the Small Attack Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Type I) requirement. This procurement is budgeted at 3.2 billion yen (approximately A$28 million) within Japan's 2025 defense budget.
The Drone40, weighing 200 grams and with a maximum payload of 400 grams, features capabilities for swarming, autonomous operation, and a range of payload options. The UAV is slated to be part of Japan's SHIELD defense system, which has received an allocation of 100 billion yen (around A$880 million) in the provisional 2026 budget. The contract could enhance DefendTex's market position, given the UAV's prior exposure with U.S. and U.K. military forces.
