Defense Metals' Wicheeda Project Gains Attention Amid Global Rare Earth Supply Shortages
Defense Metals' Wicheeda project has garnered increased attention amid a global rare earth supply shortage, particularly as export restrictions are set to begin in early 2026. The project, the only undeveloped rare earth deposit in North America with proven reserves, is supported by a potential financing agreement of up to $250 million from Export Development Canada. With plans to initiate a Definitive Feasibility Study in the first half of 2026, Defense Metals aims to address domestic supply gaps following China's recent lifting of export restrictions on strategic materials.

The global shortage of rare earth elements due to export restrictions starting in early 2026 has intensified focus on North American projects. Defense Metals is in a pivotal position with its Wicheeda project, supported by a Letter of Interest from Export Development Canada for potential project financing of up to $250 million.
China lifted export restrictions on strategic rare earth elements and permanent magnets in January, increasing demand for domestic sources. Wicheeda is currently the only undeveloped rare earth deposit in North America with proven reserves.
Defense Metals plans to start its Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) in the first half of 2026. The company recently completed a heavily oversubscribed private placement of C$16.2 million to fund metallurgical optimizations and engineering studies for the DFS. Key milestones include the successful completion of the DFS and clarification of financing conditions to confirm Wicheeda's role in addressing supply gaps.
