Delta Works: Netherlands' Comprehensive Flood Defense System Completed
DEFENSE
The Delta Works in the Netherlands, a $7 billion flood defense system, was developed after the 1953 flood disaster. It includes three major dams and a tidal barrier, aimed at protecting 1,900 sq mi from storm surges while managing salinity.
Construction began in 1957 and concluded in 1986, with the Oosterscheldekering being the most complex segment. The floating floodgate for Rotterdam was completed in 1997, allowing navigation while safeguarding against surges. The entire project has been key in preventing flooding and securing agricultural land.
