In Cades Cove, Florissant, demolition has commenced on six homes due to radioactive waste contamination linked to Coldwater Creek. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP), this marks the first residential demolition for the initiative.
All families have been relocated, with the demolition process beginning after necessary utility disconnections and permits were secured. Safety measures include air monitoring during excavation. The project is expected to conclude by fall 2026, with contaminated waste shipped to Utah. Cleanup of Coldwater Creek is anticipated to be completed by 2038.
