Destruction of Saiva Temples in Batticaloa Linked to Archaeological Excavations
TNA MP P. Ariyanethran reports on the demolition of Saiva temples in Batticaloa under archaeological pretexts, implicating Buddhist monks and the Sri Lanka Army. The ongoing excavations have raised concerns about the Sinhalicization of Tamil villages.
P. Ariyanethran, a member of the Tamil National Alliance, has raised alarms about the desecration of Saiva temples in Batticaloa, claiming that these actions are conducted under the pretext of archaeological excavation.
He accused Buddhist monks of constructing viharas on these sacred sites with support from the Colombo government and the Sri Lanka Army. The MP urged the Saiva Temples Federation to intervene to prevent the Sinhalicization of Tamil areas like Kanthaveal-malai.
Additionally, local resistance has emerged against treasure hunting activities conducted by Sri Lankan Police elite commandos in Anuradhapura district, which have reportedly increased in collaboration with military forces. The implications of these activities may further exacerbate tensions in the region.
