Deutsche Umwelthilfe and Citizen Initiative File Objection Against LNG Terminal Permit in Brunsbüttel
Deutsche Umwelthilfe and a citizen initiative have formally objected to the partial permit granted for the LNG terminal project in Brunsbüttel, citing violations of climate and environmental laws. They argue that the approval process is fragmented and fails to address critical safety issues, particularly concerning methane emissions and risks near nuclear facilities. The organizations are calling for a comprehensive safety and climate review before any permits are issued.

The Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) and a citizen initiative have filed an objection against the partial permit granted on November 21, 2025, for the LNG terminal project by German LNG Terminal GmbH (GLNGG) in Brunsbüttel. They argue that the permit violates climate and environmental laws, as it allows for a fragmented approval process that postpones key safety issues.
More than two years after the application, GLNGG has not demonstrated the overall project’s viability. The DUH demands a complete safety and climate review from the Schleswig-Holstein environmental authority.
Concerns include unresolved safety risks near nuclear facilities and inadequate assessment of methane emissions and climate impacts. The organizations emphasize that without a thorough evaluation of safety and environmental effects, no permit should be granted.
