DHS Launches Office for Drone and Counter-Drone Technologies Ahead of Major Events

DEFENSE

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established the Program Executive Office for Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems on January 12, 2026, to enhance counter-drone capabilities. DHS is finalizing a $115 million investment in counter-drone technologies, particularly for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and America250 celebrations.

The FY26 National Defense Authorization Act extended DHS and DOJ counter-drone authorities until 2031, allowing tracking and disabling of threatening drones. DHS has launched a $1.5 billion contract vehicle for advanced counter-drone technologies and awarded $250 million in grants for counter-UAS capabilities to states hosting World Cup matches and the National Capital Region.
