DHS to Upgrade 148 Uncrewed Surveillance Towers with AI Technology by GDIT
The Department of Homeland Security plans to enhance 148 uncrewed camera towers at the U.S. border with AI technology this year, including an additional 50 next-generation towers. GDIT, which previously supplied 200 existing towers, proposes the Relocatable Autonomous Surveillance Tower, featuring advanced sensors, solar power, and improved computing capabilities for on-site image recognition. This initiative is supported by $2.7 billion allocated by Congress for surveillance upgrades along borders. However, the effectiveness of surveillance alone in increasing apprehensions remains uncertain.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will install AI upgrades in 148 uncrewed camera towers on the U.S. border in 2026, with 50 additional next-generation towers. GDIT proposed the Relocatable Autonomous Surveillance Tower, equipped with advanced sensors, solar power, and on-site image recognition capabilities, which reduces reliance on human monitoring.
Congress allocated $2.7 billion for border surveillance technology upgrades. Despite funding, previous studies indicate that surveillance towers alone may not increase apprehension rates, suggesting that automated systems could enhance monitoring efficiency.
