DLA Energy Innovates Fuel System to Address Arctic Challenges in Military Operations
The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Energy Business Process Support Directorate has enhanced its Electronic Point of Sale (EPoS) system to address battery failures in subfreezing temperatures, which impacted military fueling operations. Initially deployed in 2022, the EPoS system relied on handheld scanners that became inoperable in extreme cold, necessitating frequent battery replacements by warfighters.
To resolve this, the DLA team collaborated with the EPoS Program Management Office and vendors to modify the software, enabling the pedestal's built-in barcode reader to scan QR codes, reducing dependence on battery-powered scanners. As a result, over 33,000 durable QR code tags were produced for use in cold weather, allowing secure fuel purchases at over 600 locations globally. This innovation ensures operational readiness and enhances support for military personnel in harsh environments.
