DNFSB Staff Engages Community on Safety Oversight of U.S. Nuclear Sites in Aiken
On February 26, six staff members from the U.S. Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) held a community outreach event in Aiken. They outlined their mission to provide independent safety oversight at U.S. Department of Energy nuclear sites, including examining operations related to nuclear weapons and facility remediation. The DNFSB oversees 10 nuclear sites, with resident inspectors present at five. They address safety concerns through reports and recommendations, while maintaining communication with the Department of Energy.

The U.S. Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) conducted a community outreach event on February 26 in Aiken, focusing on safety oversight at Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear sites. The DNFSB, which has jurisdiction over 10 nuclear sites, conducts inspections and provides recommendations regarding public health and safety.
Key areas of their work include the assembly of nuclear weapons, remediation of nuclear waste, and aging infrastructure. The board requires the DOE to report on safety issues and has a mechanism for addressing questionable practices through advice letters.
Despite a lack of board quorum, DNFSB continues to inform Congress about denied requests to the DOE. Ongoing concerns include safety strategies for the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility and administrative controls at the Savannah River National Laboratory.
