DoD Explores Rocket-Based Cargo Delivery Solutions with DIU Solicitation
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) aims to explore rocket technology for point-to-point cargo delivery, potentially transforming logistics in crises. Proposals for scalable solutions are due by July 17, 2023, with mission readiness targeted in two years.

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) of the U.S. DoD is soliciting proposals from commercial space companies for innovative solutions to enable point-to-point cargo delivery through space. The focus is on three mission types: transporting material payloads from Earth to orbit, from orbit to Earth, and between different orbits.
DIU plans to select prototypes based on successful submissions for demonstration missions. The initiative aligns with DoD's interest in utilizing rocket technology for critical supply missions, particularly in emergencies, with potential partners including SpaceX, RocketLab, and Blue Origin.
DIU seeks capabilities that include increased payload volume, autonomous operation, and minimal orbital debris. Successful partnerships may lead to a civilian equivalent of USTRANSCOM for non-military uses.
