Polish Automotive Firms Shift to Defence Sector Amid EU Industry Crisis
European automotive manufacturers are diversifying into the defence market due to regulatory pressures and declining demand. Polish companies, supported by a government investment program, are leveraging their manufacturing capabilities to meet military supply needs, reflecting a significant shift in the industry landscape.

As European automotive firms confront strict emissions regulations and a downturn in demand, Polish manufacturers are pivoting to the dual-use defence sector, bolstered by a government investment program worth 4.5 billion zlotys through 2035. This strategic transition is exemplified by WUZETEM, which is now producing artillery shell fuse components, indicating the automotive industry's potential to support military applications, including logistics and production automation.
KPMG reports that 73% of automotive suppliers have adapted their product portfolios for resilience, with many moving towards non-automotive sectors. The urgency of this shift is amplified by expected low operating margins and the collapse of several German automotive suppliers, which poses risks for Polish exports. The EU's local content framework may enhance domestic suppliers' chances in defence contracts.
