DOD Inspector General Assigned to Oversee Iran War Operations
The Department of Defense Inspector General has been designated to lead oversight of the Iran war, mandated by federal law. This assignment follows a request from Senator Tammy Duckworth amid concerns over accountability in military operations.

The Defense Department Inspector General (DOD IG) has been appointed to oversee Operation Epic Fury, in compliance with a federal statute requiring oversight for military operations exceeding 60 days. This designation was made by the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) on May 12, 2026, following airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel against Iran on February 28.
DOD IG Platte Moring will develop oversight strategies, assess spending accuracy, and produce regular public reports, with the first due in fall 2026. Moring, confirmed in December 2025, has bipartisan support, amid criticisms regarding the independence of appointees in oversight roles. The oversight will also involve collaboration with the IGs from the State Department and USAID, despite USAID's administrative changes in 2025.
