Dominica and Fortescue's Green Pioneer Explore Geothermal Solutions for Maritime Fuel
Dominica is working with Fortescue's Green Pioneer to demonstrate the use of geothermal energy from its nearly-completed facility in Laudat for sustainable maritime fuel production. The project aims to produce ammonia for maritime bunkering, addressing emissions in the shipping sector.
Fortescue has a goal of Real Zero emissions by 2030 and is acquiring technologies for this purpose. The Green Pioneer serves as a model for utilizing renewable energy in maritime applications. The geothermal plant is expected to be commissioned by the end of March, potentially opening markets for green fuel. Two of the vessel's engines have been converted to a dual-fuel ammonia and diesel system, with successful trials conducted in Singapore in 2024.
