Donald Trump Reiterates Interest in Greenland for National Security and Resource Control

DEFENSE

On December 22, 2024, Donald Trump stated that U.S. control of Greenland is essential for national security. He previously expressed interest in purchasing the territory, which is Danish, during his first term.

On January 5, 2026, following the arrest of the Venezuelan president, Trump emphasized the necessity of Greenland for U.S. security, claiming Denmark cannot manage it. Greenland is strategically important for defense, commerce, and critical minerals.

The U.S. has maintained a military presence at the Pituffik base for ballistic threat surveillance. Local authorities view Vice President JD Vance's visit in March 2025 as provocative due to Trump's annexation proposal.

Greenland, part of the Danish realm since 1814 and self-governing since 1979, could opt for independence. The island covers 2.2 million km², is home to over 50,000 inhabitants, and holds significant untapped resources, including rare minerals and fossil fuels, which are becoming more accessible due to ice melt.
