DRDO Develops Advanced Light Towed Artillery Gun System for Enhanced Mobility in Indian Army
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing the Advanced Light Towed Artillery Gun System (ALTGS) to enhance the Indian Army's mobility in challenging terrains, targeting a weight under 15 tons while delivering 155mm/52-calibre performance. The system, capable of firing NATO-standard shells up to 48 kilometres with a burst rate of six rounds per minute, is set for internal trials by late 2026 and aims to reduce production costs by 20-30% compared to foreign alternatives. Initial orders are expected to exceed 300 units, supporting the Army's modernization and rapid deployment capabilities.

DRDO is developing the Advanced Light Towed Artillery Gun System (ALTGS) to meet the Indian Army's need for improved mobility in rugged terrains, targeting a weight under 15 tons while maintaining 155mm/52-calibre performance. The ALTGS features lighter materials in its barrel and recoil system, along with a downsized chamber, ensuring it can fire NATO-standard shells at ranges up to 48 kilometres.
Internal trials are set to begin by late 2026, aligning with the Indian Army's modernization efforts. The project involves collaboration with private sector partners and aims to enhance rapid deployment capabilities against threats in border areas.
The ALTGS maintains a burst fire rate of six rounds per minute and is designed for efficiency in high-altitude conditions. Production costs are projected to be 20-30% lower than foreign alternatives, with initial orders expected to exceed 300 units.
