Drones Transform Border Operations in Jammu and Kashmir
Drones have fundamentally altered security dynamics along the India-Pakistan border, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir. Their use for surveillance and smuggling has led to a decline in human infiltration attempts and increased military preparedness.
The deployment of drones has significantly changed border security operations in Jammu and Kashmir. A Ministry of Home Affairs report indicated that one drone incursion occurred daily over the past five years, with drones utilized for smuggling and surveillance.
Between May 7 and 8, 2021, Pakistan launched drone attacks involving 300-400 drones targeting multiple locations, nearly all neutralized by Indian forces. The introduction of counter-drone systems, such as Man-Portable Air Defence Systems and indigenous technologies, has become essential.
Notably, human infiltration attempts have decreased from 143 in 2018 to just 34 in 2021. Drones have been implicated in transporting weapons and narcotics, prompting a shift in operational focus and increased recruitment of local Village Defence Guards. The evolution of tactics continues to challenge traditional border security measures.
