Duke Energy Considers Sites in Davidson and Davie Counties for Two New Natural Gas Plants
Duke Energy is evaluating two locations in Davidson County and Davie County for the construction of two natural gas plants. Each plant will have a capacity of 1,360 megawatts, potentially powering over 2 million homes. The company plans to finalize site selection by early 2027, pending necessary approvals. Duke Energy expects significant economic benefits, including over $1 billion in investment and the creation of 30-40 permanent jobs. Public hearings will be held for community input.

Duke Energy is considering sites in Davidson County and Davie County for two 1,360-megawatt natural gas plants, which could supply power to over 2 million homes. The company owns 1,615 acres in Davidson and 1,665 acres in Davie, both near the Yadkin River.
Duke plans to finalize site selection by late 2026 or early 2027, pending regulatory approvals. The plants are part of a long-term plan filed in October 2025 that includes five new combined-cycle facilities.
Each site will develop only 50 to 100 acres, maintaining significant buffer zones. The investment is expected to exceed $1 billion, creating 30-40 permanent jobs and thousands of temporary jobs during construction. Duke Energy anticipates power rate increases to fund these developments.
