The Enugu State Government has commenced the Subnational Methane Action Coalition (SMAC) project to implement a methane mitigation strategy in its waste management sector. The initiative aims to create an operational policy framework addressing methane emissions from landfills, focusing on institutional coordination among the Enugu State Waste Management Authority, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and local authorities.
Enugu generates 420 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, with methane emissions estimated between 456 and 4,681 tonnes annually. The project will also develop methodologies for measuring emissions and identify mitigation strategies including waste diversion and waste-to-energy options.
Its five-stage implementation plan is set to conclude by January 2027, with expected outcomes including a validated methane action framework and a roadmap for attracting further investments for climate initiatives. This positions Enugu as a potential model for other Nigerian states in addressing greenhouse gas emissions.
