Durham and UK Atomic Energy Authority Plan High-Temperature Superconductivity Centre of Excellence
Durham University and the UK Atomic Energy Authority are proposing a High-Temperature Superconductivity Centre of Excellence at UKAEA's Culham Campus. The centre aims to develop advanced superconducting materials necessary for commercial fusion energy systems. The initiative supports the UK's goal of leading in clean energy technologies and involves collaboration with government, industry, and academia, including participation from the UK and Japanese governments.

Durham University is collaborating with the UK Atomic Energy Authority to establish a High-Temperature Superconductivity Centre of Excellence at the UKAEA's Culham Campus. The centre will focus on the development and testing of advanced superconducting materials crucial for making fusion energy commercially viable.
This facility will have unique testing capabilities in Europe, simulating conditions found in fusion power plants. The initiative, announced on 2 March, is part of a public-private collaboration aimed at enhancing the UK's industrial strategy and broader applications beyond energy, such as medical imaging and advanced manufacturing.
