Egypt and Navantia Discuss F110 Frigate Acquisition for Navy Modernization

DEFENSE

Egypt is engaged in discussions with Spanish company Navantia regarding the acquisition of F110-class frigates, a significant move in Cairo's surface fleet modernization. The Egyptian Navy submitted a procurement request in early 2025, after completing technical studies earlier that year.

The initiative emphasizes industrial participation and technology transfer, involving local entities such as the Arab Organization for Industrialization and Alexandria Shipyard. As of January 2026, negotiations are ongoing, with no confirmed contract details.

Egypt is considering a limited number of F110 frigates, focusing on expanded cooperation, including construction and maintenance in Egypt. The F110-class, designed for multi-mission roles, features advanced combat systems and is currently in production at Navantia's Ferrol shipyard, with the first ship launched on September 11, 2025. The Egyptian Navy currently operates 13 frigates, forming the core of its surface combat capabilities.
