Egypt Expands Renewable Energy with Battery Storage Investments
Egypt is advancing its renewable energy strategy through significant investments in battery storage systems, attracting international funding. This shift aims to enhance grid stability and reduce fossil fuel reliance, aligning with the country's renewable energy targets.

Egypt is focusing on large-scale battery storage to enhance its renewable energy sector, with funding from international financial institutions for multiple Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. AMEA Power is developing Nefertiti and Horus, Egypt's first utility-scale battery facilities, with a financing package of approximately $223.5 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Additionally, the Kemet Group will construct a 2,000 MW solar plant and a 2,000 MWh battery system in Nagaa Hammadi. Egypt aims for 42% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 65% by 2040. The establishment of a lithium-ion battery factory is also planned to strengthen local supply chains. These developments are pivotal for stabilizing electricity supply amidst growing renewable generation.
