El Paso School Districts Join El Paso Electric's Solar Energy Program for Cost Savings
El Paso school districts are enrolling in El Paso Electric's Texas Business Solar Power program to cut electricity costs without installing solar panels, with Ysleta Independent School District subscribing for 15 accounts and Socorro Independent School District for 12. Both districts anticipate annual savings of $400,000 to $500,000, drawing energy from the Felina solar farm, although actual savings may vary. The districts are considering expanding their participation based on the program's effectiveness.

El Paso school districts are participating in El Paso Electric's Texas Business Solar Power program to reduce electricity costs without installing solar panels. The Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) approved a one-year subscription for 15 high-energy accounts, while the Socorro Independent School District (SISD) plans to subscribe 12 accounts.
Both districts estimate annual savings of $400,000 to $500,000. The program draws energy from the Felina solar farm and is limited to 50 megawatts of renewable energy. Although the program provides potential savings, it is not primarily a cost-cutting initiative, and actual savings will vary.
YISD's electricity costs increased from $7.3 million in 2024 to $7.7 million in 2025, while SISD's costs have remained steady due to reduced consumption efforts. The districts may consider expanding their participation based on the program's success.
