Elisa Completes Testing of Subsea Cable Monitoring System with Finnish Authorities
Elisa's new subsea cable monitoring technology enhances alert capabilities for potential threats. This advancement addresses increasing concerns over subsea cable security in Europe, especially amid incidents linked to hybrid warfare.

Elisa has completed testing a subsea cable monitoring system that utilizes distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology. This automated service will notify authorities and critical infrastructure owners during exceptional situations, such as ships dragging anchors.
Previously, in December 2025, a ship's anchor damaged Elisa's subsea cable, although the company reported no significant disruption. In 2024, similar incidents resulted in repair costs of around €60 million (US$70 million).
Other telecoms, such as Openreach and Orange, are also exploring DAS for leak detection. As Europe's security concerns grow, telecoms are increasingly investing in technology applications for defense, with partnerships forming to enhance security capabilities.
