Elon Musk's Terafab Project Announced Amidst Shifts in Automotive Sector with BYD and XPeng
Elon Musk unveiled the Terafab project, a $25 billion chip factory, as XPeng reported its first quarterly profit. BYD adapts to US tariffs via Canada, while Daimler Truck anticipates recovery in North America and Deutz returns to MDAX. The automotive industry is undergoing significant changes with varied strategies from key players.

Elon Musk announced the Terafab project on March 21, 2026, a $25 billion chip factory joint venture involving Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. This facility aims to consolidate all semiconductor production stages.
Despite this, UBS lowered its Q1 delivery estimate for Tesla to 345,000 vehicles, an 18% decrease from the previous quarter due to declining demand. XPeng achieved its first quarterly profit in Q4 2025, with a gross margin of 21.3%, but forecasted a 30-35% drop in Q1 2026 sales.
BYD's international deliveries surpassed domestic sales for the first time in February 2026, leveraging a trade agreement with Canada to mitigate US tariffs. Daimler Truck and Deutz signaled recovery signs in North America, with Deutz restructuring into five business areas and returning to MDAX. Key financial reports are due on March 26.
