ENGIE Commits £300m to Hydro Power in North Wales
ENGIE's £300m investment aims to upgrade the Dinorwig pumped storage hydro station, enhancing energy supply capacity. This project is significant for local employment and supports the UK's transition to low-carbon energy solutions.

ENGIE has approved a £300m investment for upgrades at the Dinorwig pumped storage hydro station in North Wales, expected to reach commercial operation by 2028 and 2029. The project focuses on replacing major components, including 160-tonne turbine shafts and 460-tonne generator motor rotors, while maintaining operations in four other units.
Dinorwig, Europe's largest pumped storage facility, can generate up to 1,800MW, enough for approximately 1.5 million homes. The project will employ over 250 workers during peak construction and draw on local and national supply chains, benefiting Welsh businesses. ENGIE is also collaborating with local universities to develop talent in the region.
