Historic Cheddar Maker Slashes Energy Bills by 50% with Innovative Heat Pump Technology
Barber's Farmhouse Cheesemakers halved energy costs and reduced carbon emissions by 66 tons annually using Arkaya's heat pump. This model showcases a rapid return on investment for the dairy sector, potentially setting a precedent for industry-wide adoption.

Barber's Farmhouse Cheesemakers has implemented Arkaya Energy's milk-source heat pump, resulting in a 50% reduction in electricity use and annual savings of £70,000. The system enables simultaneous cooling of fresh milk and heating of water to 198°F without requiring a separate boiler, recycling waste heat effectively.
Currently, three of the seven milking parlors are equipped, with full conversion expected by 2028. Arkaya launched its product in 2024, with 27 systems installed and plans for 34 more by year-end. This innovative approach highlights the potential for rapid decarbonization in the dairy industry, challenging perceptions about the costs and timelines of sustainability efforts.
