Environmentalists Warn of Algal Reef Damage from Guantang LNG Terminal in Taiwan

NATURAL GAS

Environmental advocates are concerned about damage to the algal reef near the Guantang LNG terminal in Taoyuan's Guanyin District, managed by CPC Corp, Taiwan. The terminal, operational since May 2022, has reportedly caused a decline in crustose coralline algae coverage from 84% in April 2019 to 10% in April 2023.

Environmentalist Pan Chong-cheng linked the reef degradation to construction activities, including caisson use and sand accumulation. CPC acknowledged seasonal climate effects on sand fluctuations but stated that they would cooperate in investigations with environmental groups. Research indicates rising sea temperatures and increased turbidity may also affect coral growth.
