EPA Approves $1 Million for San Gabriel River Trash Initiative
Rep. Dave Min's request for $1 million for the San Gabriel River Trash initiative has been approved by the EPA. Seal Beach Council Member Joe Kalmick announced the funding, which will support the design of additional trash mitigation measures identified in a feasibility study. The primary trash capture device will be provided by The Ocean Cleanup. The project requires various federal, state, and local permits and aims to reduce over 500 tons of river trash collected annually on Seal Beach.

The EPA has approved $1 million for the San Gabriel River Trash initiative, announced by Seal Beach Council Member Joe Kalmick. Funding will be used for designing trash mitigation measures outlined in a feasibility study.
The Ocean Cleanup will provide the primary trash capture device. Permits from multiple agencies, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and California Coastal Commission, are required.
Seal Beach currently deals with over 500 tons of river trash annually. The feasibility study evaluated 17 alternatives for trash capture, with capital costs estimated between $300,000 and $2 million. Various funding sources, including Proposition 4 Climate Bond funds, are identified to support the project.
