EPA Approves $1 Million for San Gabriel River Trash Initiative

DEFENSE

The EPA has approved $1 million for the San Gabriel River Trash initiative, announced by Seal Beach Council Member Joe Kalmick. Funding will be used for designing trash mitigation measures outlined in a feasibility study.

The Ocean Cleanup will provide the primary trash capture device. Permits from multiple agencies, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and California Coastal Commission, are required.

Seal Beach currently deals with over 500 tons of river trash annually. The feasibility study evaluated 17 alternatives for trash capture, with capital costs estimated between $300,000 and $2 million. Various funding sources, including Proposition 4 Climate Bond funds, are identified to support the project.
