ERC Promotes Indigenous Energy Use in Response to Global Fuel Price Volatility
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) of the Philippines is focusing on maximizing indigenous energy sources, particularly the Malampaya gas-to-power project, to protect consumers from rising fuel costs due to geopolitical tensions. ERC Chair Francis Saturnino Juan emphasized local resources in discussions with power industry stakeholders, including the Philippine Independent Power Producers Association. The ERC is facilitating regulatory approvals to enhance generation capacity and is monitoring supply conditions while engaging with electricity market operators.

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) of the Philippines aims to maximize indigenous energy sources, notably the Malampaya gas-to-power project, to mitigate the impact of rising global fuel costs driven by Middle Eastern conflicts. ERC Chair Francis Saturnino Juan engaged with stakeholders from the Philippine Independent Power Producers Association to stress the significance of local resources amid uncertain LNG supplies.
Discussions included gas supply developments from the Malampaya field and the potential role of domestic coal from Semirara Mining and Power Corporation. New generation capacity, such as the Terra Solar project, is expected to contribute 200 to 250 megawatts by mid-March. The ERC will continue to engage with producers and market operators to monitor supply conditions and develop contingency measures.
