Erex and Samsung C&T Japan to Develop Biomass Plant for AI Data Centres
Erex and Samsung C&T Japan have agreed to construct a biomass power plant in Niigata Prefecture, aimed at supporting AI data centres. The facility is set to produce approximately 110MW starting in fiscal 2029, with potential expansions thereafter.

Erex and Samsung C&T Japan plan to build a biomass power plant in Niigata Prefecture to meet the increasing energy needs of AI data centres. This facility will utilize palm kernel shells and wood pellets primarily sourced from Southeast Asia, leveraging existing supply chains.
Expected to generate 110MW upon its fiscal 2029 launch, the plant represents Erex's fifth biomass facility in Japan and its first aimed directly at data centre operations. Additionally, the partners are considering colocating data centres at the plant to mitigate lengthy grid connection delays, which can take up to ten years in Japan. This project aligns with the Japanese government's revenue guarantee program, enhancing its economic viability.
