ESRI Report Highlights Challenges in Ireland's Home Retrofit Grants and Heat Pump Adoption
A recent ESRI review indicates that Ireland is not meeting its retrofitting targets despite over €500 million in funding. Homeowner Sadhbh O'Neill shares her experience with SEAI grants, citing inflexibility and barriers such as the requirement for approved contractors. She opted for solar panels and alternative heating solutions rather than heat pumps due to high upfront costs and grant limitations, emphasizing the need for grant reform to better support older homes and lower-income households.

The ESRI review shows Ireland is lagging in meeting its heat pump and deep retrofit targets, despite over €500 million in annual funding. Homeowner Sadhbh O'Neill utilized only the SEAI grant for solar panels, finding the retrofit grants too inflexible and tailored towards large contractors.
She highlighted barriers such as the requirement for approved suppliers and high upfront costs for heat pumps, which require homes to achieve minimum BER ratings. O'Neill's renovation strategy focuses on insulation and electric heating panels, estimating total costs around €90,000. She stresses the need for grant reform to support older properties and lower-income households, criticizing proposed alternatives to heat pumps that could lead to carbon lock-in.
