Estonia to Enhance Defense Capabilities Amidst Deteriorating Security Situation
Estonian Defense Forces Commander Lt. Gen. Andrus Merilo stated that the pre-war peace in Ukraine is unlikely to return. Estonia plans to procure new naval vessels, reorganize conscription, and build a new military base. From 2027, conscripts will serve for 12 months, and their allowances will increase by 30%. The defense budget will rise to €2.8 billion by 2026. Additionally, Estonia will allocate 0.25% of GDP to support Ukraine next year.

Estonian Defense Forces Commander Lt. Gen. Andrus Merilo indicated that the peace prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine will not return.
Estonia plans to procure new naval vessels and reorganize its conscription model, moving to a 12-month service for conscripts starting in 2027. The number of conscripts called up could reach 4,100. The defense budget will increase from €1.38 billion in 2022 to €2.8 billion by 2026.
Estonia will allocate 0.25% of GDP, approximately €110 million, to support Ukraine next year. The Narva military base is set for completion in 2027, and the navy's capabilities will be enhanced, including upgrades to existing minehunters.
