The ETH Board is pursuing closer cooperation within the ETH Domain by developing a future-proof organizational structure. Two models are proposed: one retains the legal identities of the four research institutes, while the other merges them into a single entity.

Both models aim to create a unified image for the institutes. The ETH Board allocated federal funding for 2027, primarily to ETH Zurich and EPFL, as well as to PSI, WSL, Empa, and Eawag for strategic initiatives. Ambrogio Fasoli will step down as Vice President for Academic Affairs at EPFL on March 31, 2026, and will return to teaching and research in nuclear fusion.
