eThekwini Introduces EDINA Project for Enhanced Water and Sanitation Management
The eThekwini municipality is implementing the EDINA project to address water consumption and sewer issues through smart technologies. This initiative aims to improve operational efficiency and decision-making in the Water and Sanitation Directorate by utilizing artificial intelligence, eco toilets, and robotics.

The EDINA project will integrate smart toilets, robotics, and AI to improve service delivery in eThekwini's Water and Sanitation Directorate. This initiative aims to connect previously siloed systems and provide real-time data for effective decision-making.
Approximately 250,000 dwellings require sanitation services, with 70,000 achievable through Non-Sewered Sanitation (NSS) and Water Efficient Sanitation Solutions (WESS). Innovations like robotic cleaning and recycled effluent will reduce operational costs and promote sustainable water use.
Additionally, field testing of 19 prototypes since 2017 has provided valuable operational insights. Training workshops for municipal staff will support the transition to these technologies, which are expected to enhance maintenance efficiency and reduce reliance on potable water for sewer cleaning.
