EU Advances Ammunition Production for Ukraine Amid Regional Tensions
The EU and Norway have established a joint procurement initiative involving 23 member states to enhance ammunition production for Ukraine, addressing critical shortages. This project is part of a broader strategy to bolster defense capabilities and political engagement in Central and Eastern Europe ahead of the 2024 European Parliamentary elections.

An agreement for collaborative ammunition production has been signed by 23 EU member states and Norway, facilitating a two-year fast-track procedure for 155 mm artillery rounds. This initiative addresses the urgent need for munitions as Ukraine prepares for a counteroffensive.
Additionally, the EU Council has approved a one billion euro joint procurement under the European Peace Facility to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with artillery rounds. The project also aims to engage civil society in CEE, enhancing democratic participation and addressing regional threats. The upcoming European Parliament elections in 2024 present both challenges and opportunities for EU unity, with rising extremist politics posing risks to democratic security.
