EU Establishes €6 Billion Drone Alliance with Ukraine Amid Shifting US Defense Focus
The European Union is launching a Drone Alliance with Ukraine, while also addressing priorities in missile production through the European Defense Industrial Programme (EDIP). European Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, emphasized the need for Europe to enhance its defense autonomy in collaboration with NATO and Ukraine, especially in light of the US's pivot towards the Indo-Pacific.
He stated that defense responsibilities lie with member states, while the European Commission's role is to provide support. The SAFE program, with a budget of €150 billion, has already approved 16 national investment plans, with three more under review.
Ukraine has been designated a 'quasi-member' of the SAFE program, enabling its defense industry to participate in EU tenders and receive investment. Kubilius highlighted the need for Europe to develop strategic capabilities and improve supply chain resilience in defense.
