EU Funds Solar Energy Project to Enhance Telecom Reliability in South Sudan
A €5 million EU-backed initiative has converted over 500 MTN South Sudan telecom sites to hybrid solar systems, improving network reliability from 97% to 99.4%. However, analysts indicate that price reductions for consumers are uncertain and depend on various factors beyond operational costs.

The European Union has invested €5 million in a project to transition more than 500 telecom towers operated by MTN South Sudan from diesel generators to hybrid solar and battery systems. This change has improved network reliability, increasing availability from 97% to 99.4% while cutting diesel dependency.
However, officials and analysts caution that lower consumer prices are not guaranteed, as mobile pricing is influenced by factors such as competition, market demand, and regulatory conditions. Although the infrastructure improvements have made services more reliable, affordability remains a concern for residents in South Sudan.
