EU Gas Storage Levels Likely to Fall Short of 90% Target Before Winter
The EU is projected to fill its gas storage to only 80% by winter, falling short of the 90% target due to market pressures. ACER cites geopolitical events and competition with Asian buyers as key factors affecting LNG availability.

The European Union's gas storage facilities are currently filled to just 31%, the lowest level for this time of year since 2022. ACER estimates that achieving the 90% fill target by winter is unlikely, with a maximum of 80% being a more realistic goal, albeit at a premium price.
The EU would need to increase LNG imports by 13% compared to 2025 to meet the original target. Geopolitical tensions, particularly the Iran crisis and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, are constraining global LNG supply, which is exacerbated by increased competition from Asian markets. The European Commission urged member states to begin filling storage as soon as possible, and the gas coordination group confirmed that infrastructure could support an 80% fill level by November 1.
