EU Grants €166.7 Million for Alexandroupolis LNG Terminal Construction
The European Commission has approved a €166.7 million grant for Greece's LNG terminal, enhancing energy security in the region. Expected to become operational in early 2023, the project will support gas supply diversification for Greece and Bulgaria.

The European Commission has authorized a €166.7 million grant to support the construction of a second LNG import terminal in Alexandroupolis, Greece. This terminal aims to enhance energy security for Greece and Bulgaria, integrating into the interconnector between the two nations.
The Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) will be located approximately 17.6 km offshore, with a delivery capacity of 5.5 billion m³. Additionally, a 24 km subsea and 4 km onshore gas transmission pipeline will connect the terminal to the Greek natural gas network.
The project is expected to be operational by early 2023, contributing to a cleaner energy mix by facilitating gas use over coal. The initiative may also stimulate competition in the regional gas market.
