EU Officials Visit Ukraine to Address Chornobyl Shelter Repairs and Security
EU commissioners Valdis Dombrovskis and Dan Jørgensen visited Kyiv to discuss urgent repairs and security for the Chornobyl site. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development estimates a $584 million damage from a drone strike that compromised the New Safe Confinement structure.

On April 26, EU commissioners arrived in Ukraine to address the $584 million damage caused by a Russian drone strike on the New Safe Confinement at Chornobyl. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is leading a fundraising initiative aiming to repair the shelter by 2030, but only €70 million is currently available in the International Chernobyl Cooperation Account.
The ongoing conflict complicates repair timelines, with work scheduled to begin by 2028 if the war concludes. Discussions on enhancing defenses against future drone attacks are expected, but no new air defense systems to protect the NSC have been announced. Without these measures, long-term repair efforts face significant delays.
