EU Postpones Immediate Sanctions on Algerian Gas Amid Methane Regulation
The European Union will adopt a flexible approach towards Algeria regarding new methane emission regulations set for January 2027. This strategy ensures no immediate sanctions on Algeria's gas exports, thereby supporting ongoing energy partnerships.

The European Union (EU) clarified it will not impose immediate sanctions on Algeria's gas exports under the forthcoming methane regulations effective January 2027. Algeria ranks as the second-largest gas supplier to Europe via pipeline, accounting for 19.4% in Q1 2025 and projected at 22% in Q1 2026, following Norway.
The EU aims to support Algeria's transition through technological cooperation rather than punitive measures, focusing on evaluating Algeria's improvement efforts. European energy companies, including TotalEnergies and Eni, are integral in providing the necessary technologies to reduce carbon footprints in Algeria, enhancing compliance with EU climate standards. This collaboration may modernize Algeria's gas infrastructure.
