EU Project Shift2DC Aims to Advance DC Power Supply in Data Centers
The Shift2DC initiative, funded by Horizon Europe with €11 million, targets enhanced efficiency in energy infrastructures using direct current (DC) technology. Spanning 42 months from December 2023 to May 2027, the project involves 21 partners from 13 European countries and aims to develop, test, and validate new DC technologies for broad market deployment.
The Shift2DC project, coordinated by INESC ID in Lisbon, is supported by €11 million from Horizon Europe. It focuses on developing medium- and low-voltage direct current (MVDC/LVDC) networks to improve system efficiency and integrate renewable energies while reducing conversion losses.
The initiative involves 21 partners including Bachmann, which is leading the project from its Stuttgart location, and aims to build four demonstrators across Germany, France, and Portugal. These will explore efficiency and reliability of DC solutions in various applications including data centers and industrial settings.
Additionally, user-friendly software tools will be developed to assist in designing and evaluating DC systems. With a clear emphasis on lifecycle analysis and sustainability, Shift2DC seeks to ensure that DC solutions are not only technically viable but also economically and ecologically sound.
