Europe Records High LNG Imports Amid Cold Snap in January 2026
In mid-January 2026, European countries achieved record daily LNG imports of 486 million cubic meters due to a significant cold snap, while underground gas storage facilities were only 51.87% full, notably below the five-year average. Since October, EU nations have withdrawn approximately 39 billion cubic meters of gas from storage, prompting the implementation of new methane emissions regulations that require operators to address leaks. Atmio is collaborating with gas storage firms to develop a system for integrating methane detection to ensure compliance with these regulations.

In mid-January 2026, European countries recorded daily LNG imports of 486 million cubic meters, the highest since monitoring began, as temperatures dropped. As of January 14, UGS facilities were filled to 51.87%, 15.34 percentage points below the five-year average.
Since October 13, EU countries withdrew about 39 billion cubic meters of gas from storage, with net withdrawals reaching 34 billion cubic meters. The EU has implemented a new regulation for methane emissions requiring operators to identify and repair leaks. Atmio is developing a system to integrate methane detection with existing infrastructure, partnering with gas storage firms to facilitate compliance with the new regulations.
