European Defense Tech Startups Attract €946 Million in VC Funding Amid Rising Defense Spending
In the first half of 2025, venture capital investments in European defense startups reached €946.2 million, marking a 26% increase from the previous year. The total defense spending of EU member states is projected to exceed €326 billion by 2024, driven by the urgency for technological innovation in defense capabilities.
The NATO Innovation Fund, launched in 2023 with €1 billion, facilitates funding for startups and promotes technology adoption. Emerging startups like XRF, Quadsat, and UDS are enhancing military capabilities through advanced technologies.
The drone sector has seen notable growth, with companies like Quantum Systems and Helsing leading in autonomous aerial platforms. Investment in autonomous vehicles and robotics is also on the rise, with firms such as Milrem Robotics and SHARK Robotics gaining traction. The ecosystem is evolving rapidly, but challenges remain in attracting late-stage funding and navigating the fragmented European market compared to the US defense tech landscape.
