The Robert Crown Community Center in Evanston will transition to solar power in early April 2024, following the installation of rooftop solar panels. The project, estimated to save the city $2.7 million over 20 years, was authorized by the City Council in February 2024 and executed by Chicago-based Verde Solutions.
Under a power purchase agreement, the city will purchase solar electricity at a lower rate than its utility bill. The solar panels are projected to generate 1.2 million kilowatt hours annually, offsetting one-third of the center's energy use. This initiative aligns with the city's Zero Emissions Strategy and supports its Climate Action Plan.
